Lively, reliable Ceilidh Band, playing across the North West

Great Music for a Great Time!

If you haven’t tried it before, a ceilidh is a social dance with a caller and live band. The caller organises the dances, leading people through the moves and making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. It’s a lot like a barn dance, but more lively. It’s a brilliant way to get a party going.

We know there are a lot of ceilidh bands out there. What makes us different is the energy and enjoyment we put into our music – put simply, we love playing these tunes, and we love seeing people dance to them.

The music and the dances we play are drawn from English traditions, so they’re a little different from those you’ll encounter at a Scottish or an Irish Ceilidh. The band’s been going for over 20 years, so we’ve got lots of experience of what makes an evening work well. We do everything we can to make sure our ceilidhs are friendly and inclusive.

You don’t need to know how to dance! The great thing about a ceilidh is that everyone can join in. We’re happy playing for all ages and abilities, from people who never normally dance to seasoned ceilidh-goers. We’ve got a wide repertoire music and of dances, ranging from ones so simple they almost dance themselves, to the bewilderingly advanced and complicated!

We’ve played for all sorts of parties and gatherings over the years, including weddings, civil partnerships, birthday parties, festivals, fundraisers and more. We bring our own PAT-tested PA equipment and the caller – all we need from you is a bit of space, and people who want to dance!

“We danced the night away and had an amazing time with the energy the band gave the crowd. What a fantastic evening we had! I cannot wait to see them at their next event!”

Space For Dancing If You Want it!

With lots of notice, encouragement and promise of a good audience we can be persuaded to travel further afield. Village halls, churches, marquees, arts centres... so long as there's enough space for the six of us and our kit (we like stages!), and enough space for dancing if you want it.

What We Offer

Weddings & Celebrations

A ceilidh is a great way to mark your big day and get your guests having fun together. We’ve played for all kinds of weddings and parties over the years, from the super-smart and stylish to the most low-key and homely. We’re always honoured to be part of anyone’s special day, and we’ll do our best to make sure the party goes with a swing!

Public & Ticketed Events

We’re proud to have played for scores of local clubs, churches, arts centres and charities over the years, as well as being a regular fixture at the Space to Emerge Festival and playing the first ever Todmorden Folk Festival. Whether it’s a fundraiser, an in-house social or a ticketed event open to the public, the Earthquakers are a reliable, professional choice – not to mention good fun!

Performances

As well as our ceilidhs, we love any opportunity to play for an audience. An Earthquakers live set mixes the soul and grit of English traditional music with the passion of the protest song and the deepfeeling of country and blues. We’re up for any event where people want to listen to good music, whether it’s in a pub, concert hall, outdoor festival or a private party.

‘The Earthquakers are our resident band at our annual weekend gathering in the woods and we repeatedly book them each year because they give us just what the event needs on the Saturday night. Their lively music, kind demeanour and relentless patience at teaching the dances helps bring together strangers in a way that few other things can. Community is everything at our event, and through our live ceilidh we take building this to a new level.’

‘We had a great night with the Earthquakers. Our youngest dancer was 2 and our oldest over 60 but with some patient and enthusiastic calling we managed some really good dancing between us. They bring some excellent tunes and the arrangements fit together with dances perfectly. We look forward to the next one!'

‘The music was expertly played, not too loud (given the average age of the audience!) and great to dance to. The dance instructions were easy to follow and put across with humour and a large dose of tolerance. People have said what fun they had and those who normally don't dance (including my other half), suddenly losing their inhibitions and strutting their stuff! Thank you so much to you all, I will recommend you to anyone interested.’

‘I wanted to write a quick email to express our gratitude for the terrific ceilidh you put on at our wedding two weeks ago. I must admit that we were initially a little uncertain about the idea of employing an English band (having done almost all of our ceilidh-ing north of the border), but our concerns couldn't have been more unjustified. The music filled the room wonderfully; the songs were lively, the dances interesting and the calling capable of keeping 50+ novices swirling giddily about the dancefloor in a joyful, and almost-rhythmical, blurr. Everyone, from old-hats to previously sceptical first-timers, young and old, and not least the two of us, were having a tremendous amount of fun, and that is exactly what was wanted. Combined with your friendly, no fuss approach and very reasonable fee, we couldn't have asked for more. With thanks again, two very happy customers.’
